IADR ACADEMY

8TH IADR Academy: Integrating Behavioral and Social Determinants into Oral Health Research

Tuesday, July 20, 2021
8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. ET (-4 UTC)

Organizers: Daniel W. McNeil (West Virginia University, USA); Cameron L. Randall (University of Washington, USA)

Registration Fee Required

This academy will provide an in-depth view of contemporary issues in the integration of behavioral and social sciences in dental, oral, and craniofacial health research. Following recent consensus-building initiatives (e.g., the Behavioral and Social Oral Health Sciences Summit), there will be coverage of fundamental behavioral and social principles, including theories and mechanisms involved in behavior and behavior change approaches and their application to state-of-the-art technologies in intervention delivery. Sessions will emphasize use of rigorous and reproducible methods as well as the importance of considering equity at all stages of the research process. Incorporation of behavioral approaches along with social epidemiology and health services research also will be covered. There will be opportunity for skills development in contemporary topical areas through participation in workshops that focus on psychometrics for quantitative research, qualitative research methodology, and social network theory and analysis. Participants will complete the academy with an appreciation for an integrated rather than parallel approach to applying social and behavioral sciences to dental, oral, and craniofacial research.

AADR Faculty Development Workshop

AADR Faculty Development Workshop: Mentoring Mentors and Mentees

Wednesday, July 21, 2021
8:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. ET (-4 UTC)

Special Event Registration Required

Current evidence has supported the significance of faculty development as a tool for academic retention and advancement. In this process, mentoring holds tremendous significance as it guides post-graduate students towards their career goal and supports junior faculty in their academic growth. A key component of this is learning how to write competitive research grants. In today’s highly competitive environment at NIH and other funding agencies, these skills have become of even more paramount importance for young scientists to establish themselves as independent investigators.

This half-day workshop is designed to support junior and senior faculty in the processes of mentoring and career development in a bidirectional way. First, the workshop will discuss strategies to enhance diversity and promote work/life balance in research. Moreover, it focuses on junior faculty and post-graduate students with the goal to enhance their grant-writing skills as part of an overall emphasis on research portfolio and scholarly productivity. In a parallel session, the workshop focuses on mentoring the mentors with a goal to promote effective communication skills, to address diversity and unconscious bias, to closely mentor mentees in all aspects of their academic growth and to present techniques to synchronize mentor and mentee expectations. The two parallel sessions will take place.

Learning Objectives:

  1. The workshop aims to mentor the mentors with a goal to promote effective communication skills, to address diversity and unconscious bias.
  2. The workshop focuses on junior faculty and post-graduate students with the goal to enhance their grant-writing skills as part of an overall focus on research portfolio and scholarly productivity.
  3. The workshop aims to present techniques to synchronize mentor and mentee expectations.
